Six Degrees of The Doctor and John Lennon ...

Another one of these amusing coincidences.

Christopher Eccleston - the 9th Doctor Who - is playing John Lennon in a made-for-TV movie called "Lennon naked" (according to imdb.com).

This is funny for me, personally, as I used to be a die-hard Beatles fan (still love them) and am now a Doctor Who geek - mainly thanks to Chris Eccleston, David Tennant and two friends from Reading who introduced me to the series a long time ago.

His predecessor, the 8th Doctor, was played by Paul McGann, from Liverpool (which happens to be the twin city of Cologne, where I live now), who has three brothers who are also actors.

One of them is Mark McGann, who had also auditioned for the 8th Doctor, and who has repeatedly played John Lennon on stage and on film (John and Yoko: A Love Story), among other occasions in the 1992 Liverpool Playhouse production of "Imagine" (which I saw).

He also played The Baker in "The Hunting of the Snark" (a role which was sung by John Lennon´s son, Julian, on Mike Batt´s original CD), the sadly short-lived stage musical production in 1991. Which I am also happy to have seen.

Mark McGann also was in a stage play together with Colin Baker (the 6th Doctor, who I met in Bristol) and Louise Jameson, better known as Leela, one of the 4th Doctor´s companions (and one of my all-time favourite companions to boot).

It´s like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon", just without Kevin Bacon.

Wieder eine dieser kuriosen Ketten von Zufallsverbindungen:

Christopher Eccleston, who plays the 9 Doctor in "Doctor Who", now playing in a British TV production John Lennon. For me as a big Beatles fan and Doctor Who of course that was a godsend.

Ecclestone predecessor, the 8 Doctor was played by Paul McGann, who comes from Liverpool (sister city of Cologne where I live now) and is one of four brothers who are all actors.

His brother Mark is also the 8th Doctor auditioned and played several John Lennon on stage and in films. Once I saw him in this role live. The second time I've seen him live was in the musical "Hunting of the Snark ", where he sang the Baker, the role that on the CD John Lennon takes son Julian. And he already has with Colin Baker (6th Doctor) and Louise Jameson (Leela, companion of the fourth Doctor Tom Baker stood) on the stage.

Why Is My Mount And Blade Colors Wrong

first infected humans with a computer virus

"For the first time that a person is infected by a computer virus. The scientist Mark Gasson now has the ability to electronically secured doors with bare hands to open.

"We define a computer" virus "as a program that other programs" infect "can, giving them much changed in that they have a - possibly modified - Copy of". "Contain" the virus so circumscribed computer Fred Cohen 26 years ago, a previously unknown problem with a networked world. Up to now the definition of such a hostile program as a "virus" - note the quotation marks Cohen's - or as a metaphor borrowed from biology. Yesterday, however, has been infected for the first time a person with a computer virus.

in good faith. The British scientist Mark Gasson could be a chip implanted in his hand, which allows him to open electronically secured doors and boot up his cell phone. In the experiment could prove Gasson now that he can transfer "his" virus on the interacting systems with him. Thus, if medical implants such as pacemakers and cochlear hearing more intelligent if they can technically-chips could use or whether to increase memory performance, or if only as with virtual currency charged VIP ticket for a club, as happened in Barcelona three years ago - if we so more and more digital connections to the outside world have internalized, we can continue to infect each door. Without, as the bio-virus to affect their catch.

worse: Think of it a thousand wireless networks, which we pass through the city walk, each a potential virus stove, one would think that Doctor Gasson here has discovered a profound source of danger. One could also generalize: Switch metaphors from literal to figurative, is always imminent danger. "

http://www.ksta.de/html/artikel/1273823351584.shtml

I think the message simultaneously scary and exciting. This scientist is also working still at the University of Reading ...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ;>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ;>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"University of Reading researcher Mark Gasson has become the first human known to be infected by a computer virus.

The virus, infecting a chip implanted in Gasson's hand, passed into a laboratory computer. From there, the infection could have spread into other computer chips found in building access cards. All this was intentional, in an experiment to see how simple radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips like those used for tracking animals can host and spread technological diseases.

The research from the British university shows that as implantable bionic devices such as pacemakers get more sophisticated in the years ahead, their security and the safety of the patients whose lives depend on them will become increasingly important, said Gasson.

Gasson had a relatively simple chip implanted in the top of his left hand near his thumb last year. It emits a signal that is read by external sensors, allowing him access to the Reading laboratory and for his cell phone to operate. He and his colleagues created a malicious code for the chip. When the lab's sensors read the code, the code inserted itself into the building computer database that governs who has access to the premises.

"The virus replicates itself through the database and potentially could copy itself onto the access cards that people use," Gasson said.

The experiment showed that implants which wirelessly communicate with other computers can infect them and vice versa.

Gasson said he knows of no instances to date of bionic devices having been contaminated by computer viruses. But the threat will grow with the number and complexity of these devices.

Besides pacemakers for people with heart trouble, other modern bionic devices include cochlear implants for the hearing impaired and deep brain stimulators — a "brain pacemaker" — for neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease."

idiots ...

Was ich heute in der Post erlebt habe, steht beispielhaft für vieles, das ich an Deutschland nicht mag.

Six switches - which are occupied three: two for the bank and a post for the actual post. On all three switches people are served.

available at the Post Bank counters at two people, it does not seem to go on.
at the switch for the post forming a queue to the entrance. The people wait.

Staff at all three switches work in a comfortable pace.
hanging around the background another one or two individuals who telephoned one of them.

The line at the post office counter and will not be shorter, but none of the staff were preparing to respond. Neither speak the personnel concerned, their colleagues on whether what they perhaps come to the same, yet the lungs take in the background the initiative. So it goes
five minutes, ten minutes, half an hour.

Finally comes a suit carrier from behind the counters and moves to a Group Waiting in the postal banking.
The lady in front of me crying in the queue:
"Hi, may I please have a word short you are in charge here?"
you will be ignored.
after repeated cries only when she asks:
"Who is the store manager here?" comes the reply.
wearing suits: "This is Mrs. H., but that is not there today."
Customer: "And who is to represent?"
AT: "I am."
Customer: "So you're responsible."
AT: "I'm just banking advice."
Customer: "But you are now in charge here Have a look, take the snake could you maybe a little..?"
AT: "What shall I do then?"
Customer: "Maybe still occupy a switch?"
AT: "You can not, we have no staff."
Customer: "You are there and in the background I've also seen someone."
AT: "I'm just banking advice and the colleague-free."
customer: "But look at this but at times, people wait forever."
AT: "What shall I do, tell me, will you, what to do."
... and ad nauseam so on.

The suit carrier, which already gave the impression that it was repugnant to him to have to talk to the nasty post-Kundenplebs, where he is but only felt responsible for the fine bank customers insisted stubbornly that he indeed represents the Branch Manager , however, not responsible and that he could do nothing because the colleague, the loiterers in the background, now have free time and he was indeed responsible for the bank advice.

could compensate for the dissatisfaction of the customers his poor subjects, where you have to really credit, they've rotated so that it is progressing rapidly.

Seriously:
would in that situation in a normal company:
first The boss (even if he "only" is to represent) the 'missing' people get out of his break and let him make up for the time when the rush is over.
second If that's not enough to put even with the switch and do the same job as his colleagues, is to overcome the roughest crowds.
third The Chief apologize to the customers waiting for the delay instead of talking in a tone to this, as if their presence already a nuisance and the expectation on him to do something too far.

Somehow you can always achieve what if you only want, but the Type has left no doubt that he was not willing to do something - though that would be actually been his job.

Such people I could puke real. In any Aldi make a new plan, if pending more than 5 people. In some stores, you get back money if you wait too long. On good German: Aldi Each one gets better service than today at the Post Bank.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Long rant because I encountered an idiot in a suit at the post office today.

Of the six counters in the combined post office/post bank, only three were opened: Two for the bank (with things going on very slowly but only 2 more people waiting) and one for the post office (with a queue forming to the door and growing continuously longer). There were two more employees seen loitering in the background, one was on the phone.

At last, the other one came to the front - to talk to some bank customers who had just come in. When a lady in the queue called out to him, he ignored her until she asked for the manager. Then he deigned to reply: the manager was Ms So-and-so, but she was not in the house that day. So who was in charge? He was. So couldn´t he please do something about the queue?
Then it started. The guy insisted that although he was in charge that day, there was nothing he could do, as he was only doing bank counselling, and the other colleague was on his break.
What bothered me most was that he said that in a tone that clearly implied that he was disgusted he had to deal with regular post office customer scum, his precious attention and courtesy being reserved only for the post bank customers. His co-workers did their best to speed things up, but that guy really was the pits in dealing with customers.

Curse of the Deadly Telephone Number

I knew I was right in hating telephones! ;-)

This Telegraph article reads a bit like the story of a Japanese horror movie.

"A mobile phone company has suspended the number 0888 888 888 – after every single person assigned to it died in the last 10 years.

The first owner Vladimir Grashnov – the former CEO of Bulgarian mobile phone company Mobitel which issued the number – died of cancer in 2001 aged just 48.

Despite a spotless business record there were persistent rumours that his cancer had been caused by a business rival using radioactive poisoning.

The number then passed to Bulgarian mafia boss, Konstantin Dimitrov, who was gunned down in 2003 by a lone assassin in the Netherlands during a trip to inspect his £500 million drug smuggling empire.

Dimitrov, who died aged 31, had the mobile with him when he was shot while eating out with a model. Russian mafia bosses – jealous of his drug smuggling operation – were said to have been behind the killing.

The phone number then passed to Konstantin Dishliev, a crooked businessman, who was gunned down outside an Indian restaurant in Bulgaria's capital Sofia after taking over the jinxed line. Dishliev, an estate agent, had secretly been running a massive cocaine trafficking operation before his assassination in 2005. He died after £130 million of the drug was intercepted by police on its way into the country from Colombia.

Since then, the number is understood to have been dormant while police maintained an open file on Dishliev's killing and his smuggling ring. Now phone bosses are said to have suspended the number for good."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7763578/Mobile-phone-number-suspended-after-three-users-die-in-10-years.html

Granted, that number belonged to people who probably brought their own deaths about by their choice of lifestyle (maybe excluding the first one) but the idea of a curse is a much better story...

It is interesting that the number 8 also figures prominently in the Curse of the Olympic mascots. Actually, 8 is considered a very lucky number in China, but...

"The day that saw the heaviest snowfall in decades, paralyzing China’s transport and electricity networks, was 25 January (2+5+1 = 8); the Tibetan riots broke out on 14 March (1+4+3 = 8); the Sichuan earthquake occurred on 12 May (1+2+5 = 8). There’s that number again, only now it doesn’t seem nearly so favourable. But hang on; let’s not neglect the fact that the number 8 is divisible by 4, the Chinese number of death. And what year is it? It’s 2008, and 2 goes into 8 a total of 4 times. And so it continues… "

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

a telephone company in Bulgaria has a phone number now permanently disabled after all owners have died in the last 10 years.

The first owner was the former company executive, who died in 2001 of cancer. There were rumors he was poisoned by a rival radioactive.

The number went to a Mafia boss who was shot in 2003 of a "business trip" in the Netherlands. Again, a bomb attack is suspected.

The next owner was a businessman who acted the way with drugs and was shot in 2005 in Sofia. The police have the number still operate for a while, to his business contacts to get on the track and now it has been permanently shut down.

course, just the last two owners belong to a breed of people who constantly lives with the risk of unnatural death, but the headline still reads like a Japanese horror film ... :-)

also interesting in passing that the phone number is 888 0888 just 888th The eight appeared again and again that is also in the Curse of the Fuwa. In Chinese numerology, although the 8 is a lucky number, but on the other hand also of 2x the 4, the absolute number of accidents and death ...

Tonner Doll Convention was this weekend ... Takes cold

... and they introduced the first two characters from the upcoming Firefly line of 16" dolls as convention exclusives: Mal and Inara.

Both will be available in the regular line later as variations.

The outfits look great, but the actual dolls look like poor likenesses of the actors to me.
I was already disappointed with Tonner´s Doctor and Captain Jack (Harkness, not Sparrow) and am even more so with Mal and Inara. Just... no. Perhaps they look better in person, but from the (few) owner´s pictures I´ve seen so far, I don´t really think so.

My disappointment is strictly on an art-appreciation level, though, mainly because I know, and Tonner has proved in the past, that he can do so much better.

Part of me would have loved to see him come forth with dolls that actually look like small versions of the actors they represent, and in a good non-caricature way. I would have loved for such dolls to exist and be available, even if they were expensive. Tonner´s licensed character figures are too expensive for me to buy at full price, but if I had liked them, I might have lucked out and found a good offer or a nude at an affordable price at some point - there´s always a good chance if you´re patient.

But these dolls simply look like completely different people than the characters they are supposed to represent and at the price point of Tonner´s licensed character figures, that´s just not up to par.

At the same time, while I am disappointed in Tonner as an artist, I am also quite relieved that I don´t like, love or want these dolls. There´s more than enough vinyl people "living" here anyway.

In the U.S., Tonner Doll Convention on the weekend. Online, there was finally pictures of the first long-heralded "Firefly" Dolls see: Mal and Inara. You do not see how time and from Inara. I am disappointed by Tonner, because I know he could have done better, but also very happy because now I'm not in danger, I want to be.

Remedy For Stomach Gas

I'm gnarzig. Since one week I struck a bloody cold now drag around with me. Sore throat, headache, cough, runny nose ... I've had enough!

The last 2 days I have brought out a single beat. Bah, was the nasty.

Yes, of course I went to the doctor. At the very beginning. What a crappy experience.

I must say this: I was the first time here in town for a doctor because I usually do the same in the practice run, if I have a little complaint. I have therefore tried to identify the general physicians from the phone book and I first went to the one at home was out the next.

The address was a house without a shield, without any indication that could be here once been a doctor or not. Great. (I asked in the other practice, and the thought that the address is correct, but the colleague did leave and was represented by the third doctor in town was nice, he even indulged in -. BUT NOT AS YOU NEED TOP OBSERVED? )

I come to the next-more practice.
grumble because the moment you come to me first thing the receptionist that they were indeed a pure futures practice, and the office hours are generally over. I would call even can. On the class. Then they will certainly draw to the write in the phone book.

I could but still gracious to share the waiting room and the Lord Doc .. no, the doctor (I refuse to spot the word for such a doctor) so I was then in his infinite generosity, but still under investigation shortly.

found and that I have a cold. (Oh no!) And what does he say?
"Take what paracetamol, due to a cold I do not write ill. "

So the idea I would even come alone.
would But I do not need 10 euros wasting Nazi practice fee.

You feel it really seriously and in good hands! It's so nice to the doctor that I there quite unnecessarily go, if I am wide awake and feel or have the impression that meet a couple of paracetamol, and I'm back fit.Vielleicht I wanted to talk and just with the nice receptionists.

Seriously, I would not have gone to the doctor, if I had not used primarily a certificate for my "price" I got him. said. Because he thinks that I should check with the "course". Yes HELLO?

... because one is a nothing more.

Except that I does not guarantee that everything go away.

Rant on German TV

this weekend's the LOST finale run (at least in the U.S. and some other manner without, of course not in Germania). I have followed the series only in summaries and summaries, as I was by some of the descriptions and references here and there, curious and have tried to figure out what it is for there now is all about. It has never appealed to me but so much that I would have considered "correct". And GOD I AM GLAD NOW THAT I HAVE SO NO TIME WASTED! Quenched

I had, inter alia, that the producers und Autoren schon bei der ersten Staffel in Interviews erwähnt hatten, daß sie nicht vorhätten, einige der Rätsel auf der Insel aufzuklären (u.a. die Bedeutung der Zahlen, die immer wieder auftauchen). HALLO?!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

has also come to an end in England, "Ashes to Ashes". A series that I definitely want to look too. When I think of it, but again I could get excited about the German television. Since sending the first season of "Life on Mars" with large advertising budgets to a peak viewing time. I've also appreciated. Then they put off a second on the team "in autumn". Well, the synchronization needs to do his time.

Just then came the fall: and no second season. Which is - as far as I'm aware of it - that did not run today. Apart from the fact that the international version of the series, but already from the distributors, across from the British original in every episode was cut. Since I already know then that DVD versions I do not even need to be considered.

ran But recently, "Ashes to Ashes" at Premiere. Now, aside from the fact that it is still doubtful whether we ever get to see all 3 seasons, "Ashes to Ashes" follows on directly "Life on Mars" on. Of course, to the output of the 2nd Season! More precisely, to spoil without the fate of Sam Tyler in "LOM" so to speak, what the fate of the heroine in "Ashes to Ashes" makes it all possible, and of course, is expected to "ATA" also repeatedly mentioned how "LOM" is. So that makes total sense, this series before the 2nd view Season LOM ... if one wants to spoil this.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>

have made something similar with "Farscape". Because they radiate the first 3 seasons, but this already in a rhythm that is both the port is losing the story and the like (see also Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica): About half a season, then pause, then first-time reps, then a handful of new episodes (which can easily miss if you look at the reps, not all is doing), then pause, repeats all previously aired episodes, then a handful of new, then pause ... Hello? I would like to maybe someday even know what to do next?

The 3rd and 4 Season in the regular TV at all never run. Only on Premiere. The 4th there was even aired only once unsynchronosiert. But they do show, however - mind you, years later, when fans remember almost exclusively on Farscape - The Peacekeeper Wars miniseries. Directly because starts where the 4th Season has ended and clarifies the issues that this has left open. The damned do not make sense if the 4th Season does not know. The way in Germany it is not even on DVD.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>

Not only are always bought in itself interesting series, played, and the audience then often left to hang without a sequel, while the series elsewhere happily goes on and on (whether the soaps are now, sitcoms or shows like Doctor Who).

Sometimes you get laid is also unfinished series that were never completed or canceled early: I'm just Nowhere Man, Surface, and now - just announced with much publicity - Bionic Woman.

It really is not fun, in the German television (and no matter whether pay TV, or so-called "Free TV") engage in series.

He-Man: The secret origin

Fun fact that I found on TheaterHopper.com who found it on the Internet Movie Database:

Did you know that the Mattel Toy Company started to make some Conan the Barbarian action figures, but after viewing the film, the executives realized that they could not afford to be associated with a film with graphic sex and violence examined. They gave their doll blonde hair, called him "He-man," And Thus created He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Have just read something witty to TheaterHopper.com:

Mattel 1982 had been with the production of Conan-the- Barbarian action figures started. Then you saw the movie (with Arnie) and found that there's enough sex and violence , Found that they are not as toy company that wanted to be associated. Conan was her blond, got a new name and that was the birth of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" ...

scary message of the day

Place in U.S. laboratory, U.S. researchers first synthetic organisms ago
20.05.2010 - 21:49 UHRDr. Greetings from Frankenstein: A team of U.S. geneticists Craig Venter for the first time a cell with completely artificial genome has created. All genes were generated solely from chemical elements in the lab, Venter said on Thursday.

The breakthrough in research could, for example, intended to create artificial bacteria to produce bio-fuels or to use against Lead pollution.

The method could advance the development of synthetic biology. "This is a very powerful tool in biology to shape our desires new," said Venter. "There are a variety of applications." Consideration could be the development of synthetic algae that absorb carbon dioxide and alleviate the consequences of the greenhouse effect, said könnten.Venter, the production of a synthetic micro-organism is "an important step - in science as in philosophy ". The research breakthrough change my view of life and how it works. "

Venter said, that the long-term research on the project were accompanied by discussions among scientists about the ethical consequences.

built for the experiment, the scientists not to an entire cell, but only the genetic material. They created an artificial set of genes along the lines of the bacterium Mycoplasma mycoides with almost 1.1 million base pairs, and it translated into a different bacterium - Mycoplasma capricolum - a. The artificial genome then took control of the bacterium.

The U.S. researcher Craig Venter had been already ten years ago as one of the co-authors in decoding the human genome a name.

Scary news of the day

Scientist Craig Venter creates life for first time in laboratory sparking debate about 'playing god'

Artificial life has been created in a laboratory for the first time by a maverick scientist.
Dr Craig Venter, a multi-millionaire pioneer in genetics, and his team have managed to make a completely new "synthetic" life form from a mix of chemicals.

They manufactured a new chromosome from artificial DNA in a test tube, then transferred it into an empty cell and watched it multiply – the very definition of being alive.

Now Dr Venter believes the organism, nicknamed Synthia, will pave the way for more complex creatures that can transform environmental waste into clean fuel, vaccinate against disease and soak up pollution.

But his development has also triggered debate over the ethics of "playing god" and the dangers of the new technology could pose in terms of biological hazards and warfare.
"We are entering an era limited only by our imagination," he said announcing the research published in the journal Science.

Dr Venter, a pioneer of genetic code sequencing and his team at the J Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland, have been chasing the goal for more than 15 years at a cost of £30m.
First they sequenced the genetic code of Mycoplasma genitalium, the world's smallest bacteria that lives in cattle and goats, and stored the information on a computer. Then they used the computer code to artificially reproduce the DNA in the laboratory, slightly modifying it with a "watermark" so it was distinguishable from the original natural one. Finally they developed a technique of stripping bacteria cells of all original DNA and substituting it with the new artificial code. The resulting "synthetic cell" was then "rebooted" and it started to replicate. The ability to reproduce or replicate is considered the basic definition of life.

Dr Venter compared his work with the building of a computer. Making the artificial DNA was the equivalent of creating the software for the operating system. Transferring it to a cell was like loading it into the hardware and running the programme. "This becomes a very powerful tool for trying to design what we want biology to do. We have a wide range of applications [in mind]," he said.

The researchers are planning to design algae that can capture carbon dioxide and make new hydrocarbons that could go into refineries. They are also working on ways to speed up vaccine production, making new chemicals or food ingredients and cleaning up water, said Dr Venter.

While a major technological leap forward the life form is still incredibly simple in natural terms. Its DNA is made up of 485 genes, each strand of which is made up of one million base pairs, the equivalent of rungs on a ladder. A human genome has 20,000 genes and three billion base pairs.

Nevertheless it is the beginning of the process that could lead to creation of much more complicated species, and into a world of artificial animals and people only envisaged in films such as Ridley Scott's Bladerunner and Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Julian Savulescu, an expert in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, said: “Venter is creaking open the most profound door in humanity’s history, potentially peeking into its destiny. He is going toward the role of a god: creating artificial life that could never have existed naturally. The potential is in the far future, but real and significant: dealing with pollution, new energy sources, new forms of communication. But the risks are also unparalleled. We need new standards of safety evaluation for this kind of radical research and protections from military or terrorist misuse and abuse. These could be used in the future to make the most powerful bioweapons imaginable."

Dr David King, director of the watchdog Human Genetics Alert, said: “What is really dangerous is these scientists’ ambitions for total and unrestrained control over nature, which many people describe as ‘playing God’. Scientists’ understanding of biology falls far short of their technical capabilities. We have already learnt to our cost the risks that gap brings, for the environment, animal welfare and human health.”
